This climb is an incredible journey through Arusha National Park, home to diverse wildlife, lush forests, and scenic vistas. It’s a perfect acclimatization climb for those planning to summit Kilimanjaro and offers a unique wilderness experience with fewer crowds.
After breakfast in Arusha, you’ll head to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Here, you’ll register and prepare for your trek with the support of porters and an armed ranger (due to wildlife presence). The first day of hiking feels like a walking safari, with frequent sightings of diverse animals. The day ends at Miriakamba Hut with a beautiful sunset, a hot meal, and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, you’ll ascend a steep trail along the ridge leading to Saddle Hut. With stunning views of the Mt. Meru Crater and Ash Tray, this trail is both scenic and rewarding. Once you reach Saddle Hut, you have the option to hike Little Meru with your guide to further acclimate before the summit attempt. Enjoy an early dinner and rest up for the midnight departure.
Your summit day begins early at 12:30 a.m. After tea and biscuits, you’ll set out at 1:30 a.m., ascending through Rhino Point and Cobra Point before a rocky scramble to the summit. Reach the top at sunrise for unforgettable views of Kilimanjaro and Meru’s Ash Tray. After celebrating, you’ll descend back to Saddle Hut for a brief rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, you’ll begin your descent through forested meadows, where there are more opportunities for wildlife spotting. At Momella Gate, you’ll be greeted by a driver and transferred back to your hotel in Arusha.
This four-day climb offers a rewarding experience filled with scenic views, wildlife encounters, and the chance to summit Tanzania’s second-highest peak.
