The Umbwe Route (Northern Circuit) is a challenging and shorter path up Kilimanjaro, noted for its steep inclines and difficult terrain. The rapid ascent poses a significant risk for altitude sickness, making slow progression essential for safety. While this route experiences less foot traffic than others, the likelihood of reaching the summit diminishes without an acclimatization day. The Umbwe Route typically requires a minimum of six days, although extending to seven days is advisable for better acclimatization. Along the way, it intersects with the Machame, Lemosho, and Shira routes.
The Western Breach Approach provides an alternative path to Uhuru Peak from the west. This strenuous route ascends approximately 850 meters over about 2 kilometers, involving some scrambling along rocky formations. Although scenic, the Western Breach is notorious for its difficulty, and a tragic rockfall incident in January 2006 led to a temporary closure of this route. It was reopened in 2007 under the condition that climbers proceed at their own risk.
Begin your adventure with a vehicle pick-up from your hotel, followed by a drive to the Umbwe Gate. After completing the registration process, the trek commences through the lush rainforest, leading to the Umbwe Cave Campsite where your tents will already be set up.
Dinner will be served upon arrival, followed by an overnight stay at the campsite.
After breakfast, trekkers will continue through the remaining forest, eventually transitioning into the moorland and heath zone, where stunning views of the Barranco Valley and the ice cap at the summit can be enjoyed.
Upon reaching Barranco Camp, dinner will be served, and you will overnight here.
Today features a shorter hike, starting with a challenging ascent of Barranco Wall, where acclimatization is key. After reaching approximately 4,200 meters, trekkers will continue across ridges and valleys to Karanga Campsite.
A hot lunch will be provided at Karanga Campsite, followed by a short rest and additional acclimatization trek up the scree slopes towards the Southern Ice Field.
The trek today ascends to the Barafu Campsite, where the altitude becomes increasingly noticeable. The climb is steep, requiring a slow and steady pace to avoid fatigue and altitude sickness.
After arriving at Barafu, enjoy lunch and an early dinner. Rest will be essential in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.
This crucial day begins around midnight, with a light breakfast fueling the trek. The objective is to reach Uhuru Peak just after sunrise, climbing steep scree and snow to arrive at the crater rim.
Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, spend some time taking photos before descending to Barafu Huts for lunch. After collecting your gear, continue to Mweka Huts for dinner and overnight stay.
On the final day, descend from Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate, traversing through montane forest. This descent takes approximately 3-4 hours.
Upon reaching the gate, sign out and prepare for your vehicle transfer back to your hotel in Moshi, where a certificate presentation and celebration will conclude your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
